Want to work in the gig economy? Take these 5 online courses first

01 Feb

There is a change in the employment landscape. In the midst of hiring freezes, more employers are looking to short-term contract workers, or freelancers, to fulfill their HR needs.

Welcome to the gig economy.

This does not have to be a negative. Disciplined freelancers get to decide how much free time they have over how much money they want to earn. However, there has to be more conversations about the freelance workforce.

More conversations

First, companies need to dispel the archaic notion of the “irresponsible job hopper”. And freelancers need to take on more tranches of their specialised skillset to add value to employers – and that means they need to be well-trained.

“People looking into working in the gig economy should adopt a knowledge-hungry attitude as a bonus selling point to companies. Hiring managers today appreciate the hunger and entrepreneurial spirit exhibited by the independent worker,” said ScienTec Consulting's Head of Business Cecilia Sim.

“Online courses offer the motivated worker the opportunity to upskill without affecting productivity. If workers show a desire to learn — backed by a list of certifications — it will increase their employability," Ms Sim added.

Lifelong learning

Convinced to join the legion of freelance workers? The good news is SkillsFuture has opened up myriad online courses offered by foreign and local tertiary institutions. You may use your S$500 SkillsFuture grant to defray these costs.

We have listed five essential courses to start as a freelancer. But if you still have doubts, contact ScienTec Personnel consultants at 6225 3272 for a free consultation on how you can have a fulfilling career in the gig economy.
